History

Lennox Longboarders was founded in 1996. With no longboard club in Lennox a handful of guys got together to form the club, today it's still going as strong as ever. Regular social occasions and comp days keep the group doing what they love, surfing longboards. The location is perfect. Lennox Head boasts a world renowned point break and the longboarders are there to take it all in as the southerly swells run up the east coast of Australia.

The club was proposed back in 1996 at an expression of interest meeting on the 30/04/96. The meeting, attended by 25 people, was to discuss the formation of a social longboard club in Lennox Head. The Lennox Head Bowling Club was approached as possible patron of the new club. A proposal was made to hold a social longboard club round on the 1st Sunday of each month.

First Committee Members of the Club
President
- Paul Hicks
Secretary - Daffy Chisholm
Treasurer - Craig Moane
Contest Director - Crouch McCleary
Publicity Officer - Keryn Noach
Social Director - Greg Butler

The first club round was held on the first weekend in August, 1996. Two heats were surfed and a social round.

The first interstate club challenge was held between Lennox Longboarders and the Tugun Malibu Club. Tugun travelled to Lennox Head for the event and went home "trophyless" after a rather large weekend. This event was an annual challenge surfed out in early September, but has been unsurfed for many yers.

During early 1997 the club continued to hold a monthly contest. At the Annual General Meeting that year a change of guard in the committee was made. The new members were: Secretary - Bruce Davie Mclellan, Contest Directors - Crouch McLeary & Scott Lewis, Publicity Officer - Craig Morne, Junior Reps - Aiden McLellan & Scott Channon.

The club travelled north that year for the annual surfout with the Tugun club. Lennox Head came home winners.

98-99 Season A new direction for the club. A move was made from the Lennox Head Bowling Club to the Lennox Point Hotel as major club sponsor and patron. This was a fruitful decision as in 1998 the club held the inaugural Lennox Longboard Classic. This event proved popular attracting 78 contestants.

This season proved to be a growing time for the club. Increasing sponsorship enabled the club to gain much needed equipment. A caravan was purchased. A family based membership was developing. The 2nd Lennox Longboard Classic was a huge success. Tugun finally won the inter club challenge.

99-00 Season The AGM held in August 1999 voted in a new committee. President - Wayne Booth, Secretary - John Glassington, Treasurer - Gary Blackman - Wayne Booth, Gear Steward - Terry Kay, Comp Director - Neil Hardy, Social Directors - Grant Ryan & Les Lee, Junior Club Capt. - Scott Channon. The club was moving into the year 2000 with participation increasing in various regional competitions.

The club has grown and extended the activities to include: a 3 monthly surfout called the 5 ways Longboard Competition. This event is held in conjunction with the Ballina Malibu Club. A bimonthly newsletter to club members was started. Participation with the All Girls comp and Gromfest.

2000-2001
Season The new season has seen the club grow and foster it's junior talent with good results in all comps. The new Committee has seen the club become incorporated. The future looks great with an increased interest within the community, club membership building and the Lennox Longboard Classic now recognised as one of the premier events on the eastern seaboard of Australia.

2002-2008 The club continued to prosper into the 21st century, slowly building itself into a family orientated entity enjoying longboarding & the ocean.

The Lennox Lonboard Classic

The annual Lennox Longboard Classic continues to thrive & has become a important piece of the annual longboarding calendar. 2008 was the event’s 11th year.

Its 10th anniversary in 2007 was a great success, not only for great waves at Lennox Main, but it had naming rights & was called that year The Sa’Moana Resort & Virgin Blue Lennox Longboard Classic 2007. It’s a credit to the club with the success of the classics over the years. Proceeds from the Classics over the years have been attributed to both national & local community organizations such as, the Cancer Council of NSW, the Wespac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service, the NSW Disabled Surfers Association North Coast Branch, Lennox Head Surf Lifesaving club & the Lennox Head Rural Fire Services to name a few.

Interclub challenges

Interclub challenges continue with the introduction of the 6 ways format back in 2006. Clubs involved being Lennox Longboarders, Ballina Malibu Club, Byron Malibu Club, Evans Head over 8’s, Second Wind Malibu Club, & Burleigh Longboard Club. This is a annual event hosted by the clubs mentioned & held in the month of September. This replaced the old format the 5 ways inter-club. The first was held in 2006 & hosted by Lennox at Lennox Main beach.

In 2006 the club had its 10th anniversary. Celebrations by club members old & new gathered at the Lennox Surf Club to mark the 10 years of existence of the club.

Other activities

Another achievement of the club has been its involvement with the annual events. The All Girls Surf Showdown & Gromfest. Both of these multi-day events are part of our fund raising efforts. Club members over the years have setup & pulled down  these events with keenness & enthusiasium, a credit to all involved over the years. We have become known for our professionalism with the organizations involved with these events.

The first club Life Member was bestowed on its then president Wayne Booth in 2007, for his contribution & service to the club over the years. Hopefully more worthy recipients will be bestowed with this great honor in the near future.

From our ranks have come some notable longboarders over the years. Excelling to national level with titles & such names such as the Glassington Boys, Luke & Alex. Scott Channon & recently Kara Nobbs. These individuals as well as many others in our ranks, take the club’s name into the longboarding scene & promote the local talent that our local region exhibits.

What the future holds is in it’s club members. Unity, good times & promoting the club on the national longboarding surfing arena, brings together the benefits of club spirit & camaraderie.
